OpenAI Adds Real-Time Video Analysis to ChatGPT

OpenAI announced Thursday that its chatbot, ChatGPT, can now process and respond to real-time video feeds. The feature, first teased seven months ago, was revealed during a livestreamed event as part of the company’s ongoing product updates.

The new functionality allows ChatGPT to identify objects through a smartphone camera and provide spoken feedback based on what it observes on-screen. For instance, users can seek help composing a reply to a message displayed in an app or receive step-by-step guidance for tasks like brewing coffee.

The video feature will begin rolling out Thursday for subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans. OpenAI’s enterprise and educational clients are set to gain access to the feature starting in January, according to the company.

OpenAI has steadily expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities since its launch two years ago, moving beyond text-based interactions to include audio, images, and now video. These multimodal features aim to make the chatbot more versatile and user-friendly across different contexts.

Thursday’s announcement is part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of Product” event series, a livestream showcase of its latest innovations. In addition to unveiling the video analysis feature, OpenAI has introduced a premium ChatGPT Pro subscription and begun rolling out Sora, a tool for generating AI-powered video content.

By incorporating video recognition, OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT’s utility for everyday tasks and professional applications. The addition reflects the company’s commitment to creating tools that seamlessly integrate into users’ daily routines.
