Epic Games says Unreal Engine 5.9 is official and its Preview arrives next week, according to a post from @UnrealEngine. The post names broad categories rather than specific features, and says more details are coming soon.
What the post lists
Epic says 5.9 will include improved AI workflows, web as a target platform, rendering and animation updates, plus more. The post gives only broad categories and a Preview timing of next week.
Epic also says some changes are already landing in the 5.9 branch on GitHub, with more coming over the next few days. The post describes these changes only as landing in the 5.9 branch on GitHub.
How 5.9 fits Epic's earlier plans
Epic's State of Unreal 2026 recap from June said UE 5.8 was the last planned major release for Unreal Engine 5, while reserving the option to release 5.9 if needed. The same page described the experimental Model Context Protocol plugin in 5.8, which lets developers connect models such as Claude to Unreal projects. It also described diffusion-model workflows that use depth passes, normal maps and camera data as conditioning inputs, with tools planned for early the following year. Unreal Engine 6 is targeting an Early Access release at the end of 2027, according to the same page.
Creator posts filled in more detail earlier this year. @Stefan_3D_AI said 5.9 was announced at Unreal Fest Seoul on August 20 and listed more MCP skills, an Epic Developer Assistant and Semantic Search as coming in 5.9. That post also said diffusion models would run as extra render passes on top of the real-time frame. A second creator, @smart_poly, said Epic confirmed 5.9 at Unreal Fest Seoul 2026 with more AI MCP plugin improvements and AI integrations.
The scope has been reported differently. GamesGPU reported that a possible 5.9 would be a maintenance update focused on critical bugs, performance regressions and stability, without major new graphics technology.
Our read: Epic's post points to a substantial AI-focused release, while the GamesGPU report describes a much smaller one. The Preview notes will show which account fits.
Who should care
Unreal Engine developers should watch for the Preview notes, since the feature list is broad and the scope has been reported in different ways. Teams with AI tooling built on the MCP plugin have the most to check once the Preview lands.
