WinCentral reports that OpenAI's public API specification references an unannounced GPT Image 2.6 model, and @synthwavedd says it seems to be dropping today. The poster showed only words, and the launch timing comes from their reading of limited Arena testing.

What the leak shows

WinCentral says the endpoint definitions reference GPT Image 2.6 and that a new "markup" image-edit option in the spec is labelled as supporting both GPT Image 2.5 and 2.6. The report describes a launch as appearing imminent based on those references, and the report's only timing signal is those spec references. Its expected gains in text rendering, hands and multi-object consistency are WinCentral's own expectations, not findings from the spec.

The poster's post makes a timing claim and a quality argument. Based on limited testing on Arena and their experience with GPT Image 2.5, they say image generation has plateaued at GPT Image 2. In their view, 2.5 was only slightly better and 2.6 is likely to be a similarly marginal step.

Where GPT Image 2.5 stands

Wikipedia lists GPT Image 2.5 as released on September 8, 2026, with a Sketch feature and latency cut by 50%. It shipped as two API variants: Flare, aimed at speed, and Sunburst, aimed at more detail at the cost of time. GPT Image 2 arrived in April 2026, and OpenAI's API docs for gpt-image-2 list its snapshot as gpt-image-2-2026-04-21. Our earlier report on ChatGPT Images 2.5 covers those features.

For readers tracking image models, watch for an official OpenAI announcement, which would settle the date and show whether 2.6 is available in ChatGPT, the API or both, and at what price.
