In a recent System Card for GPT-4o, OpenAI broke down the potential risks tied to their latest AI model, focusing heavily on safety. One big worry? Users might begin to anthropomorphize the chatbot—essentially, treating it like it’s human and even developing feelings for it.

OpenAI explains it like this: “Anthropomorphization involves attributing human-like behaviors and characteristics to nonhuman entities, such as AI models.” With the introduction of voice interactions, these human-like qualities could become even more pronounced, making it easier for people to feel like they’re chatting with a real person.

During their extensive safety checks, OpenAI noticed something interesting. Some early users of GPT-4o’s Voice Mode started expressing a kind of emotional bond with the AI. Statements like “This is our last day together” popped up, hinting at a deeper connection than just a casual chat with a bot.

The Ripple Effect on Social Connections

While these interactions might seem harmless or even sweet, OpenAI is sounding the alarm on how they could evolve. The company is concerned that over time, people might start relying more on these AI interactions, potentially at the expense of real human relationships.

“When you think about things like car safety and airplane safety, there’s a huge amount of testing and external validation and external standards that we as a society, and as a group of experts, agree upon,” Ur said. “And in many ways, OpenAI is kind of rushing forward to deploying these things that are cool because we’re in this kind of AI arms race at this point.”

Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to dive deeper into research on how different user groups with various needs interact with the model. They’re also gearing up for more independent studies to get a clearer picture of these risks.

The company states, “We intend to further study the potential for emotional reliance and ways in which deeper integration of our model’s and systems’ many features with the audio modality may drive behavior.”
