Over 1,000 mathematicians have joined the Association for Human Mathematics (AHM), and 654 of them have also pledged not to use AI in their research at all, according to @Hesamation. The AHM members page lists 1,008 members, 654 of whom belong to the AI-free caucus.

The group's founding announcement says its aim is to protect mathematics and mathematicians from AI companies. Reporting that cites New Scientist says the AHM formed after OpenAI released 722 papers in October 2026. That timing conflicts with the September 12 founding announcement, and a 36Kr report gives an August founding date.
What members commit to
Every member signs two commitments, according to the members page:
Not to publish mathematical texts that AI models generated, including papers, reviews, referee reports, lecture notes, teaching materials and books.
Not to work with commercial AI companies by providing technical labor, mathematical knowledge, consultation or publicity.
Membership is free and open to people in the mathematical research community at graduate level or higher. Members must tell their collaborators about these commitments.
The AI-free caucus
A third commitment is optional. Caucus members do not use AI models in a research capacity, including for finding proofs, exploring examples or posing research questions. Newsminimalist describes two tiers: 'vegetarian' members avoid work for AI companies and chatbot use in writing, while 'vegan' members avoid AI in research entirely. Members include professors and PhD students. Their reasons range from environmental concerns to job security, and some cite undisclosed payments from AI companies to mathematical leaders.
Disputed claims
A viral claim said Terence Tao endorsed the boycott statement. A 36Kr report says Tao does not appear on the member list, though its headline describes him reposting the statement.
The same 36Kr report gives an August 2026 founding date and 809 members, which conflicts with the September 12 announcement and the current count. It also says an AI detector flagged the statement as fully AI-generated, a claim it presents as unverified.
The AHM has accused OpenAI of a 'total disregard for norms of scientific research' over the mass release, according to OfficeChai. No response from OpenAI has been reported.
Critics, according to the newsminimalist report, say AI-generated results are often impenetrable and hastily presented, even when formalized.
